The Automobile Association (The AA), a British motoring association founded in 1905 was demutualised in 1999 to become a private limited company which currently provides car insurance, driving lessons, breakdown cover, loans and motoring advice, and other services. Following demutualisation the AA Motoring Trust was created in 2002 to continue its public interest and road safety activities. In 2007 the AA merged with Saga Group to form Acromas Holdings.

The Company was founded on 30 May 1848 in Hatton Garden in London as The Prudential Mutual Assurance Investment and Loan Association providing loans to professional and working people.

In 1854 the Company began selling the relatively new concept of industrial branch insurance policies to the working class population for premiums as low as one penny through agents acting as door to door salesmen. The army of premium collection agents was for many years identified with the Prudential as the “Man from the Pru”.

Allied Dunbar was a large British insurance company. In its early years as Hambro Life Assurance it was listed on the London Stock Exchange and was once a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index. However it was acquired by the Zurich Financial Services in 1998.

 

History

The Company was founded by Lord Joffe, Sir Sydney Lipworth and Sir Mark Weinberg who set up its headquarters in Swindon town centre in 1970 under the name ‘Hambro Life Assurance’.  It was first listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1975.
