Barclaycard UK TV Advert – Dudley Moore Sept 1981
Barclays launched Barclaycard on 29 June 1966, initially as a charge card, but following Bank of England agreement to the offering of revolving credit, it became the first credit card in the United Kingdom on 8 November 1967. It enjoyed a monopoly of the credit card market in the United Kingdom until the introduction of the Access Card in October 1972.
Barclays was not the first issuer of a credit card in the United Kingdom though; Diners Club and American Express launched their charge cards in 1962 and 1963 respectively. Barclaycard was originally a BankAmericard licensee, and became part of the Visa network on its formation in September 1976.
In 2021, Barclaycard cut credit limits for over 100,000 customers, including customers who had never missed a payment. In some cases limits were cut by over 95%, resulting in “completely useless” credit limits.

Six Million Dollar Man Action Figure 1976
The Six Million Dollar Man show debuted in 1973 on the ABC Network, based on a book series titled Cyborg. The show and its star, Lee Majors, would become a smash hit, so it was no surprise when Kenner released their toy line in early 1975. The line consisted of several figures including 3 different versions of Steve Austin. Also released were multiple accessories, playsets and vehicles, along with various non-action figure items such as Play-Doh sets, Movie Viewer, Give-A-Show Projector and more.
There were 7 figures released for the Six Million Dollar Man line during its run from 1975-1978, but 3 of them were just different versions of Steve Austin and another (Dr. Kromedome) wasn’t even made by Kenner. Still, these figures were truly iconic and a real highlight of toys produced in the 1970’s.

A series of animated adverts aired on RTÉ in 1989 for Silvermint’s sweets, featuring the adventures of Steve Silvermint, a “cool, clean hero” reminiscent of a Dick Tracy-style private eye. In each episode, Steve battles the villainous Ugly Sweets, defending the deliciousness of Silvermint’s treats.
